What is today the Fernandez Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, traces its origin to June 1948, when a young couple, Leslie and Lourdes Fernandez, started a clinic with two beds. That clinic grew into one of Hyderabad’s most well-recognized institutions – Fernandez Hospital.
Today, there are three hospitals, with over 300 beds, two Outpatient Clinics, and a Child Development Centre.
Every team member at Fernandez is wholly committed to our mission of providing high quality, evidence-based respectful care to women and children.
India’s high maternal mortality rate and the rising percentage of unnecessary medical interventions became a cause of concern for Dr. Evita Fernandez, the Foundation’s Chairperson.
After studying global best practices, she came to the realization that in countries where midwifery forms the backbone of maternity services, mortality and morbidity of both mother and the newborn reduced significantly, in many cases to single digits.
Dr. Evita then successfully ran a pilot midwifery programme in Fernandez Hospital and subsequently institutionalized it as a full-fledged midwifery service. She also made it her lifelong mission to promote midwifery in India.
Year 2011 saw the launch of Professional Midwifery Education & Training (PMET) Programme – a 2-year pilot programme to train 8 in-house nurses as Professional Midwives.
The pilot programme had a huge, positive impact on delivering respectful, woman-centered care to mothers and the newborn.
With midwives to tend to them, women began to have a greater say in the way they birthed their babies. For instance, they could choose the birthing position they were most comfortable with, they could opt for birthing partners and more.
Fernandez Foundation followed it up with 8 batches of inhouse nurses joining the programme between 2012 and 2019.
By this time Dr. Evita Fernandez was convinced that the need of the hour was to have professional midwifery across the country, as the backbone of safe respectful, equitable and woman-centric maternal care.
This has become such a driving force within Fernandez, that we launched the Fernandez Midwifery Initiative (formerly known as ProMiSe) with the objectives of…
Through PROMISE, the taskforce created by the Professional Midwifery Education & Training (PMET) Programme helps deliver simple safe, affordable care to low-risk mothers in the community.
In April 2016 a National Consultation on the Causes and Determinants of Caesarean Sections was held.

We opened one of India’s first fully equipped Midwifery-Led Units in Fernandez Hospital, Bogulkunta.
We inaugurated our new contemporary nursing and midwifery training institute.
Our journey continues as we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that women and children receive high quality, respectful and humanized maternity care because good health and a life of dignity are their birthright.

We stay forever in debt to the selfless contribution of our
International Midwifery Educators (IMEs), who helped us sow the seeds of midwifery education in India. They came when Fernandez Foundation had no midwifery role models to look up to or emulate. They believed in our vision and shared their invaluable experience and learnings with our trainee midwives. While we are working to spread midwifery across India, these IMEs remain deep in the roots – their teachings constantly pushing our purpose of providing respectful maternity care and humanized births to all women.
